Preparing for the future

Is it uncommon to start saving for your retirement at the age of 16? I think it is, only because financial knowledge isn’t taught very well in school. I think economics should be mandatory, because most people can’t go more than 2 days without working before start running out of money. I’ve decided to portion my paycheck into thirds: personal, savings, and investments. Since I don’t have any bills, I might as well put some money away for a rainy day. I also used some online investment calculators, and since interest is exponential growth, the fact that I started saving at 16 means I’ll have way more retirement money.

Unless something unfortunate happens and I lose my house or something, and then I have to put all my money towards something just so I can survive. Currently I’m making around $12 an hour, but my work is not guaranteed. I will always have work to do, I just mean that I’m not guaranteed any amount of work hours in a week. Sometimes I consider working off commissions instead of being paid a fixed salary, but each one has its pros and cons I guess. On the plus side, I would be one of the few people in my grade that worked off of commission, if not the only one. Most of my classmates work at fast food, grocery stores, or call centers anyway. With my kind of workload, I might need to call one of the best Reno Chiropractors soon.

Since I’m on the topic of my future, I’m also thinking about housing in my future too. For a while, I’ve been planning on being roommates with my best friend. It’s taboo for a boy and girl to live together if they’re not dating, so it probably wouldn’t be the best idea. But I wouldn’t mind having a roommate, I’d even live in an RV for a while just to build up a nest egg. I see myself as pretty minimalist, I don’t need a ton of toys or clothing to be happy. Just my video games, and a TV. One problem I can foresee is just getting bored with my small life, but that’s why I’ll be saving up money for my entire life

Generic Pictures of Service Businesses

Most of the photo sites are charging quite a bit and the pictures are not thrilling when it comes to pictures for service businesses.  By ‘service business’, I mean any business that rely on customers calling in to request services.  So it could be a plumber, an electrician, a taxi company, a carpet cleaner, or even a tow truck company.

When helping these kinds of companies with their web presence, one of the difficulties is getting great pictures for their websites. It’s hard to follow a plumber around all day to snap candid shots.  Not a great use of my time.  So I’d like to be able to buy stock photos – but most are terrible and over used.  Especially the plumbing and carpet cleaning ones.  To test this, take a look at a plumbing site.  Find a picture of a plumber under a sink, or working on a water heater.  Copy the URL for that photo and put it into  TinEye will show you and give you an approximate count on how many times it has found that same photo used on the web.  Ugh.

So, see that in this example the photo has been found 168 times!  That’s crazy!

I want to have pictures that aren’t found 168 times on the web!  I do have a collection of photos that I share with friends to keep the use down to a minimum.  Here is an example from

Reno Towing Company very original picture

But how can we keep our pictures original?  I totally expect that people will steal from me – but that’s not a big worry, as long as the date stamping proves my first use and ownership.

I think that if I did find my pictures used on the web for another similar property – I’d go ahead and send them a bill.  Not sure for what amount, but I’d want compensation.

My bigger concern is that there is a whole industry that is formed around selling photos – and they’re so overused that they’re probably detrimental to the buyers.  Am I on target?  Is that something that the search engines are checking?  Since TinEye exists, I’m pretty sure Google has a similar technology in place.  I wonder if they’re adjusting search results based on this or not.

Hamburger Casserole

This dish is SO simple, SO easy, and one of my favorites! My mother had so many great recipes, and this simple recipe is the one me and my brothers always asked for. It’s very basic but it’s hard to beat! 🙂

Hamburger Casserole Recipe (feeds 4-6 people)

  • 2 large russet potatoes
  • 1 can green beans
  • 1 can corn
  • 1 pound hamburger
  • ketchup
  • splash of milk
  • 2 TBS butter
  • ~1/4 cup cheese

First thing you want to do is get your potatoes boiling. First, wash and peel the potatoes. Cut them in half, then cut those halves in half… keep the pieces around the same size so they take the same amount of time to cook all the way through! Get some water boiling on the stove, then add your potatoes. Turn the heat down and let them cook! Make sure to turn your hood exhaust on… consider using a hood cleaning service such as Hood Cleaning Las Vegas NV to make sure your hood is clean, functioning well, and ready to go!

Once your potatoes are cooking, you can get your hamburger cooking as well. Start cooking your one pound of hamburger on medium heat.

Once your hamburger is cooked thoroughly, it’s time to start mixing ingredients! In a large mixing bowl, add your cooked and drained hamburger, 1 can of green beans, 1 can of corn, and a good squirt of ketchup! Start mixing with a spoon. Keep adding ketchup until all of the ingredients are slightly covered in ketchup, but it’s not sloppy with it. It seems like a lot of ketchup, but trust me!! It’s good! 😉

Once this mixture is done, put it in an oven safe pan- such as pyrex bakeware. Spread it out evenly and make sure there is still some room on top.

By now, your potatoes should be ready. Check them with a fork. If a fork goes into them easily, they are done! Drain your potatoes, and put then back into the pot. add a splash of milk and 2 tablespoons of butter. Optional – add more milk and butter to taste. Mash these ingredients up with a potato masher. Once they are mashed, add this mixture on top of the hamburger mixture. Spread evenly to cover the hamburger mixture. Sprinkle some cheese of your choice on top of the potatoes.

Put this into the oven on broil. Watch closely… this is pretty quick! Broil until the cheese on top melts, and you start to see some light brown color on the potatoes.

And that’s it! You are done – this is a very simple dish, but it is such a wonderful comfort food that makes you feel right at home.
